Portugal has a strong strengh ;P about universitary traditions, per example every colleage has it's own student's dress which represents the city and traditions. i've just bought mine (first years, arent allowed to use it until the final parade.)
and i wonder how's like in your country. i know that most of european countries dont have many traditions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFhIKKzt0XY

that's a video where you can see my universitary music group (those groups are also a tradition and they have a specific name "Tuna" and they have appeared because, as the romantic people we are, we used and still do, a lot of singing to the beloved girls at their house, where they sit at their window, and we boys sing outside) in that video, you can see in a general form our uniform! We are not forced to use that uniform everyday, but we use it a lot as a sign of respect for the tradition.

I study in a city near the sea, where people used to live from the salt. as so our traditions are all based that activity and our uniform as a lot of small signs that simbolize the salt, the boats and the fishermen, like the cloak with the hat. Another example of students traditions, that you can find in portugal is a particular one, in Coimbra (the first universitary city in the world), where first years cant walk in the streets after midnight, if they are found doing it, the older students (properly dressed, and without showing their face) will punish the firstyear, who can defend himself by doing a fight with the leader of the group, or to try to recognize one of the group members. this tradition represent the universitary police force that existed for 200 years and repressed the students (its abolished by now). Only a few things are in common with the traditions all over the country: the dress is black, there's a cloack (with a particular shape depending on the city), at least one 'Tuna', and the first years must suffer to learn! (by suffer i mean pranks ;P)

so tell me about your colleage traditions =P

i forgot to say:
http://www.loja-academica.pt/trajes.html
in that site you can see a few dresses around the country. mine is the first one in the second line. the cloak in there seems to be small but belive me. it touches the ground ;P

the first group are student's dresses, the second are for teachers (i dont know any teacher who uses it) the third group are for doctors (by doctor i mean the highest level of student possible, usually only old men achieve that level ;P )

I'm not in collage yet but I don't think we have as eccentric and exciting traditions as you guys do. A smile a day makes people think you're werid! I'll have to look into it though,If I find something I'll let you know.
